Maryland Department of General Services, Governor’s Office of Community Initiatives, and Department of Housing and Community Development Expand Outreach Efforts to Distribute Food to Marylanders in Need

ANNAPOLIS, MD – Lt. Governor Boyd Rutherford today joined End Hunger in Calvert County to distribute meal kits, greet volunteers, and present a Governor’s Citation to the organization for their services to the community. End Hunger in Calvert County is a non-profit organization who works to address issues related to hunger in the county, and seeks to help individuals create permanent solutions that help move them from dependency to self-sufficiency.

The organization recently volunteered their warehouse to serve as the third distribution hub for an initiative spearheaded by the Maryland Department of General Services (DGS), the Governor’s Office of Community Initiatives (GOCI), and the Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development (DHCD) to distribute shelf-stable meal kits to non-profits in the region.

“Our administration is proud to partner with Maryland’s non-profit organizations to address issues important to our communities,” said Lt. Governor Boyd Rutherford. “We continue to remain committed to working with organizations like End Hunger in Calvert County to provide resources to families in need of assistance across the state.”

The shelf-stable meal kit distribution initiative was announced by Governor Hogan in late February and is a partnership between DGS, GOCI, and DHCD to coordinate the acquisition and distribution of approximately 500,000 shelf-stable meal kits, valued at over $2 million, to Marylanders in need. To date, over 156,000 kits have been distributed to 130 organizations. End Hunger in Calvert County will join the Anne Arundel County Food Bank and the Eastern Shore branch of the Maryland Food Bank in serving as a distribution hub for the food kits, with several more distribution hubs around the state expected to be announced in the coming weeks.

Lt. Governor Rutherford’s visit to End Hunger Calvert is a part of Governor Hogan’s Cabinet Meeting held in Calvert County. State agency leaders have planned visits to various organizations throughout southern Maryland, including Charles, St. Mary’s, and Calvert Counties. The Regional Cabinet Meetings are a part of an initiative by Governor Larry Hogan, introduced in an effort to bring state government to all Marylanders.
