Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development Receives President’s Award from Maryland Affordable Housing Coalition

(October 19, 2016) – The Maryland Affordable Housing Coalition’s annual meeting was held today in Baltimore, featuring an awards ceremony and remarks from a wide range of speakers, including Lieutenant Governor Boyd L. Rutherford and Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development Assistant Secretary Matthew Heckles, who provided an update on the department’s multifamily programs. The department’s Director of Multifamily Housing, Elaine Cornick, participated in a panel discussion looking at local and state housing needs and initiatives.

The department’s Community Development Administration Multifamily Division was presented with the President’s Award by MAHC President Ivy-Dench Carter. The award is given at the discretion of the coalition’s president to acknowledge an individual or organization who has demonstrated outstanding leadership and collaboration in advancing the affordable housing industry in Maryland. The department was recognized for the strides made over the last year to streamline operations, increase staffing and improve customer service to the development community, resulting in an increase in affordable housing in Maryland. Elaine Cornick, Construction Finance Manager Alvin Lawson and Housing Development Officer Brien O’Toole accepted the award on behalf of the department.

The Maryland Affordable Housing Coalition advocates for resources for affordable rental housing development through sustained or increased funding for established programs, such as the department’s Rental Housing Programs. The coalition has a diverse group of over 185 member organizations, including developers, attorneys, local governments, state housing finance agencies, lender, property managers, nonprofit sponsors, public housing authorities, investors and syndicators.
