EmPOWER helps low income households with installation of energy conservation materials in their homes at no charge.

New Carrollton, MD – Low-income households across the state will receive assistance with installation of energy conservation materials in their homes at no charge through the Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development’s EmPOWER Low Income Energy Efficiency program.  The EmPOWER program will reduce a household’s energy use, lower monthly utility bills and improve the overall health and quality of life for Maryland’s working families.

The Board of Public Works earlier this month approved ten of EmPOWER’s new network partner contracts, totaling $18.3 million. With the program’s renewal, the department can continue to provide weatherization and energy retrofit improvements to low-income families until 2017.

“Updating homes to be more energy efficient saves hard-working families money,” department Secretary Kenneth C. Holt said. “We are grateful for the support of  Governor Hogan, Comptroller Franchot and Treasurer Kopp for the great work the department does to help families save money through these energy efficient upgrades.”

Eligible single-family households may receive the following improvements to make their homes safer, healthier and more energy efficient:

  • Insulation in the attic, floors and walls
  • Hot water system improvements
  • Lighting retrofits
  • Furnace cleaning, tuning and safety repairs
  • Refrigerator retrofit
  • Health and safety items such as smoke and carbon dioxide detectors
