Maryland Department of General Services Hosts Maryland Mayors and Municipal Leaders

ANNAPOLIS, MD – The Maryland Department of General Services (DGS) today hosted an information session for mayors and municipal leaders across the state. The primary goal of this information session is to provide local municipal leaders with valuable and transparent information about DGS capital grants, state surplus, and federal surplus programs that can assist townships in their efforts to improve the services that their local governments offer their citizens.

Mayors and municipal leaders received information on how their communities can benefit by accessing available resources in the following three programs that are administered by DGS: the Federal Surplus Property Program, the state’s Capital Grants & Loans Program, and Small and Minority-owned Business Contracting Opportunities at DGS.

“DGS is committed to finding new partnerships and opportunities with the mission of changing Maryland for the better,” said DGS Secretary Ellington E. Churchill, Jr. “Many organizations have already benefited from participating in our programs, and today’s information sessions will help ensure that Maryland citizens are receiving all resources available to them through state government.”

From January to June 2018, federal surplus property valued at over $8.1 million was donated to public schools, non-profit organizations, and municipalities in underserved communities throughout Maryland through the Federal Surplus Property Program, which is administered by DGS. Currently, $798 million in capital grants provide much needed funds for local infrastructure projects, which creates jobs across the state. In addition, in fiscal year 2017, $27 million in contract payments were made by DGS to small businesses across Maryland for providing goods and services to the state.
