Surplus Meals Available at Hagerstown Food Bank Branch

A portion of 500,000 meal kits recently distributed to nonprofit organizations across Maryland has come to Hagerstown, according to state Del. Paul Corderman.

In a news release Friday, Corderman’s office said Gov. Larry Hogan and his administration in late February announced a partnership between the Maryland Department of General Services and other agencies to bring 500,000 meal kits to residents in need.

The “shelf-stable” meals were made available through a surplus property donation program through the federal government. DGS then distributed the meals across the state.

Corderman said a portion of the additional meals are being made available at the Maryland Food Bank’s Western Branch location in Hagerstown.

“Thanks to the leadership of the Hogan administration, these meals have been made available to the people of the City of Hagerstown and Washington County,” Corderman said in the release. “I, along with those in our community, are thankful for this opportunity and I look forward to continuing to work and support those in need.”

DGS Surplus Property Manager Bradley Thomas told Corderman’s office in an email that one truckload of meal kits was delivered to the food bank in Cumberland and one went to Hagerstown during the first phase of donations.

“During our second phase of this project, we plan to continue servicing the residents of Washington Count and Western Maryland,” Thomas wrote.

It’s Unclear how many meals were delivered to Hagerstown.

Phone messages seeking comment from Frank Ducey, the programs manager for the food bank’s Western Branch in Hagerstown, were not immediately returned.

Recently, the Federal Emergency Management Agency offered Maryland an additional two million shelf-stable meal kits for underserved populations, according to the release.

Corderman’s office said local agencies are encouraged to contact the Hagerstown food bank to coordinate distribution of meals.

The Hagerstown branch is at 220 McRand Court, just off West Washington Street, or Md. 144, in the city’s West End. The food bank can be reached at 410-737-8282.
