Maryland Department of General Services Visits The Maryland Dove In St. Mary’s City

MARY’S CITY, MD – The Maryland Department of General Services (DGS) today joined the Historic St. Mary’s City Commission to tour the Maryland Dove. The Maryland Dove is a replica of “The Dove,” an early 17th century English trading ship. On March 25, 1634, a day that is now known as Maryland Day, settlers disembarked from two small sailing ships – the Ark and the Dove – onto Maryland soil. They landed at St. Clement’s Island, the site of the future St. Mary’s County.

“With the celebration of Maryland Day later this month, DGS is taking the opportunity to visit a piece of Maryland history,” said DGS Secretary Ellington Churchill Jr. “The original Dove, one of Maryland’s icons, is a part of our state’s origin and our agency is proud to be a part of the preservation and restoration of this state treasure.”

Historic St. Mary’s City Commission (HSMCC) has three capital projects approved in the Hogan administration’s Fiscal Year 19 capital budget. The Dove Pier is a replacement of the pier where the historic Maryland Dove replica docks; the Visitor Center includes replacement of exterior fabric, updates to the fire protection system and restrooms; and the design of the replacement Maryland Dove. In order to expedite procurement, DGS is working with HSMCC to delegate procurement authority and management of these three projects.

The Department’s visit to the Maryland Dove is in association with Governor Larry Hogan’s Cabinet Meeting being held today in Calvert County. State agency leaders have planned visits to various organizations throughout southern Maryland including Charles, St. Mary’s, and Calvert Counties. The Regional Cabinet Meetings are a part of an initiative by Governor Hogan, introduced in an effort to bring state government to all Marylanders.
