Maryland Capitol Police K9 Champ Celebrates 3rd Birthday

BALTIMORE, MD – The Department of General Services (DGS) today celebrated the 3rd birthday and one-year anniversary of Maryland Capitol Police’s K9, Champ. Governor Larry Hogan attended the celebration and presented Champ with surprise birthday treats.

“Champ is always a welcome presence at the State House,” said Governor Larry Hogan. “Our administration is thankful for all he does to protect our citizens and we look forward to another great year of service from him.”

Over the past year, Champ has protected public areas, state complexes, and public officials by searching for explosives. Champ patrols a total of 36 buildings and 12 parking garages in Baltimore and Annapolis. Champ received “Employee of the Month” from DGS in September 2016.

“Champ is an amazing K9 with a quick response to detecting explosives,” said DGS Secretary Ellington Churchill. “He is a valued member of the Capitol Police and a beloved family member of the DGS family.”

Champ joined the Maryland Capitol Police on June 10, 2016, the first of two K9 members of the Maryland Capitol Police’s working dog program. Champ is a male English Labrador Retriever who was acquired from AK9I training center in Virginia, where he learned explosive detection. Champ learned to detect 23 different explosive odors/combinations to include ammunition and firearms. He was ‘hired’ for his levelheadedness and tireless work ethic.
