DGS Deputy Secretary Nelson Reichart joined Chief Michael Wilson and Lieutenant Rebecca Labs of the DGS Maryland Capitol Police (MCP) at the bill signing ceremony for HB 1188 on May 12 in Annapolis. The bill makes changes to Maryland law that clarify the mission and goals of the MCP, and it eliminates confusion created by different references to MCP in current law.

“We were very happy with the successful outcome of HB 1188 in the 2015 legislative session,” said Chief Wilson. “The changes it makes will help us operate more efficiently and effectively.”

The bill also extends MCP police jurisdiction to 1,000 feet in any direction at State multi-service centers, which provides MCP  with the authority to enforce criminal laws and parking and motor vehicle laws when a multi-service center requests it.

Our goal is to ‘Change DGS for the Better,'” Mr. Reichart added. “This law reflects the kinds of changes we’re making to improve services and be more responsive to our clients’ needs.”
